Ystebøtræet, Radøy

Ystebøtræet

The smallholding, Ystebøtræet, on the east side of Radøy, just on 10 kilometres north of Manger, is supposed to have been built at the end of the 19th century. The living room and the hayshed are under the same roof, with a covered passageway of stone and a stone shed on the one gable. The other gable is covered with a large granite wall. The living room is cog-jointed, and the hayshed is jointed - a classical combination. The smallholder here had a few acres of land and did some fishing on the side; a little Spartan farm based on scarce resources. This little house demonstrates the popular building style from its characteristic side: the simple, canny functionalism gives a tight, architectural expression in the landscape.
