Nedrevåge

Vågsbygdo was severely hit by landslides and rock falls in the decades around 1700, in addition, the rivers transported masses of loose sediment, both large stones and gravel. A lot of what slid down from the Vågsliene (slopes at Våg) collected in Neravåge. It was so bad that the damage “never again can be remedied or restored”, it was said in 1670.

Nedrevåge raised a number of skilful land cultivators through generations. Ola Torbjørnson Nedrevåge (1797-1875) was the most prominent amongst them. “Neravågen” was an outstanding farmer without his equal in Tysnes. He made a lot of money on seines and fishing and acquired capital that he invested in his inherited farm. Thus Nedrevåge became the wealthy farm of which it is still renown.

The main house at Nedrevåge, built in 1835 was the finest of the 14-15 houses Ola Torbjørnsen is said to have built. The main house at Nedrevåge was widely praised. The southern house was the biggest in Tysnes. The house is still standing almost unchanged today.

Ola T. Nedrevåge also erected several sheds and boathouses in Neravåge. The roomy and long “Longabuo” was probably built in three sections.

“Notahuset” (shed for seines) was pulled down in the 1940s. That may have been the notahuset which Ola Neravåge’s father and uncle owned in partnership around 1800.

In “Saltebuo” (the salting shed) the old “Neravågen” salted his herring.

«Saltebuo» og «Longabuo» – den siste utvida og påbygd to gonger (Svein Nord).
