The large burial field at Varberg and Myklatun dates back to a time when the local community was developing rapidly. The farms developed, the fields had fences put round them and the farmyards had more and more houses built on them. It is possibly this population increase that is manifest in the many burial mounds and fields in the proximity of Eidfjord. This time has also been a time of strife, and the fortified refuge at Varbergshaugen is situated in an open position, with wide views and control of the traffic in Øvre Eidfjord.
